Smudging - What is it? 2013 Post from JMW

by Jodi~Lynn on 02/16/19

" Smudging is an age-old tribal tradition which has been used for centuries to create harmony and peace. There are many different smudging ceremonies. To define it more clearly, smudging is the burning of herbs or incense for cleansing, purification, protection of physical and spiritual bodies, banishment of negative energies. Many of us appreciate the benefits of a soothing bath or a vigorous shower to cleanse and refresh our body. Equally as effective but on the psychic energetic level is the practice of 'smudging'. 'Smudging' is the common name given to the Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing, a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition. However the burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is common practice in many religious, healing, and spiritual traditions. It is a ritual way to cleanse a person, place or an object of negative energies or influences. The theory behind smudging is that the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as it clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space to be regenerated"

When to Smudge Yourself

Smudging yourself on a daily basis can be very helpful in keeping yourself balanced and maintaining a peaceful state of being. However, you should definitely use shamanic smudging techniques when you've been around people who are ill, depressed, fearful, angry or generally emotionally unbalanced; before meditating to create a calm state of being; when you're feeling blue or depressed; or when you've been under a lot of stress.Smudging yourself is easy. If you're using a smudge stick, light the smudge stick on a candle flame. Hold the stick in the flame until there is a lot of smoke and the stick is burning well (that's why a candle is better than a match. It can take a while to get the stick really smoking). Using a feather (or feather fan) or your hand, gently fan the smoke onto your body, starting at the top of the body and moving downward. Get the back of your body as best you can (it is often easier to use a smudge pot and loose herbs for this). When you're done, inhale a little of the smoke (just a little!) to purify your insides.

Instructions for Smudging your home~

  • 1

Purchase a sage smudge stick from a natural-foods store, metaphysical shop or  boutique that sells goods for the home.

  • 2

Focus on your goals for the smudging process before you begin. If your hope  is to dispel negative energy or cleanse your home of stress or conflict,  visualize the peaceful surroundings that you are trying to create. If you are  trying to freshen and energize the rooms, imagine the stale air disappearing as  the sage smoke scents the rooms.

  • 3

Light the broad end of the stick with a lighter or matches. Blow on or fan  the sage until it begins smoking freely.

  • 4

Walk slowly through your home with the smudge stick, waving it gently in  front of you to distribute the smoke. As you walk, be conscious of your thoughts  and feelings. Many people repeat prayers for cleansing or healing as they  progress through their home; others focus on positive images  such as smiling loved ones or white light. If there is a particular area of your  home that needs extra attention, spend more time in that room. Be mindful and  aware of your presence in the room, and the sage's clarifying  smell.

  • 5

Extinguish the smudge stick after you have finished by stubbing the end  gently in an ashtray or saucer until all embers are out. Wrap your smudge stick  in foil, cloth or a plastic bag and store it in a dark, dry place until you are  ready to use it again.

"You are remarkable - another validation.  I was a bit shocked and selfishly disappointment that Mr. B (big Lou) showed... but, he needed to tell Grandma B something.  AGAIN - amazingly, you hit so much on the head.  From the way he lived and died, the picture in the oval frame, the Hawiaan red flower, and her health.   Grandma B had a "reason" why you were able to "say" all.    During the reading you kept mentioning a shed with foundation damage.  I kept discrediting you saying "she doesn't have a shed".  Well, she didn't have a "shed" like you and I know, but (unknown to me) her husband, Mr. B, referred to the storage under the addition as "the shed".  Yesterday, I kept hearing your words about the shed and I was amazed with goosebumps - when I went to Grandma's and she was upset as she showed me the structural damage that her contractor came across while he was about to install a new door .  The rotten structure and crumbling foundation was EXACTLY how you described it to me last month.  As I looked around -- this storage was used as one would use a shed (storing yard stuff, etc)."

The Rainbow Bridge ~

by Jodi~Lynn on 02/16/19

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
